Forensic gDNA Purification Kits

DNA profiling is an important tool for solving crimes in Forensic Science. The methods used in DNA analysis include Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assays. PCR has revolutionized the DNA testing and has replaced RFLP. Currently, Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) are used as genetic markers. Other emerging forensic techniques include DNA methylation profiling and Next-generation sequencing of STRs and mitochondrial genome.

Successful DNA profiling depends on the rapid and efficient isolation of high quality DNA from forensic samples. The various DNA isolation methods available are based on either phenol:chloroform extraction, chelex resins, DNA-preservation FTA cards, or solid phase-based purification involving silica membranes or other silica-coated particles. Solid phase-based purification using silica based spin columns has many advantages over the other available methods. Silica based spin columns allows the selective binding of DNA to the columns, which is then followed by washing and elution of the bound DNA. Contrary to this, phenol:chloroform extraction method uses hazardous chemicals and chelex extraction method cannot efficiently remove the PCR inhibitors. Although FTA cards are convenient for storage and transport but they may not yield high amounts of DNA and cannot be used for diluted samples. Thus, BioVision’s Forensic gDNA Purification Kits use silica based spin columns. Our spin columns do not utilize guanidine salt, a hazardous protein denaturant, which will ensure the safety and health of scientists and protect the environment.

BioVision’s Forensic gDNA Purification Kits provide a rapid and easy method for isolating high quality genomic DNA from a variety of forensic samples including saliva, hair, nails, feathers, eye, nose, dried body fluids, buccal swabs and sperm. Each spin column can bind approximately 100 μg DNA. DNA purified using these kits can be used for multiple downstream applications such as PCR, Southern blotting, restriction digestion etc. These kits are validated by researchers around the world.
