An antimalarial drug. Inhibits autophagy of glioma cells via a mechanism distinct from that of 3-Methyladenine. It has in vitro activity against several viruses including coronaviruses. It is suspected to act as an inhibitor of acidification within cellular endosomes, thereby interfering with an early post-entry step of virus replication. Hydroxychloroquine may have greater in vitro inhibitory activity than chloroquine.
