Peroxiredoxin 1 belongs to the peroxiredoxin family of antioxidant enzymes, which reduce hydrogen peroxide and alkyl hydroperoxides. Peroxiredoxin 1 may play an antioxidant protective role in cells, and may contribue to the antiviral activity of CD8-positive T-cells. This protein target may participate in the downstream signaling mediated by growth factors and TNF-alpha by regulating the intracellular concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, and may play a role in cancer development or progression.
