2-Hexyl-4-Pentynoic Acid is an inhibitor of histone deacetylases (HDACs). It is a derivative of Valproic acid. It inhibits HDAC activity with an IC₅₀ of 13 μM, compared to an IC₅₀ of 398 μM for Valproic acid. It induces histone hyperacetylation at a concentration of 5 μM in cerebellar granule cells and increases HSP70-1a and HSP70-1b mRNA levels at 50 μM. It is neuroprotective against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity.

2-Hexyl-4-Pentynoic Acid is supplied as neat oil. The concentration of neat oil is 100% (not corrected for purity) and weight per volume is the density rather than concentration. Solubility limit in DMSO is approximately 20 mg/ml. We recommend taring the weight of a suitable container, and weighing a given amount of product into the container so that the volume of DMSO required will be appropriate for the volume of the container and the desired solubility. If you were to weigh 40 mg of the neat oil, dissolving to a final volume of 2 mL, for example, would result in a 20 mg/ml stock solution.
