Unfolded Protein Response
The Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) is initiated in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in response to accumulation of misfolded proteins. Signaling pathways activated in UPR are aimed at halting protein translation, increasing production of molecular glycoprotein-binding chaperones, protein disulphide isomerases and degrading accumulated misfolded proteins. This prevents the incorrectly folded proteins from reaching their destination cell organelle. ER specific ubiquitination enzymes accumulate and even at times initiate apoptosis in cases of extreme stress.
